Do I need any of China's official apps for my trip?
Probably not all of them — maybe none. Payments work fine with a foreign card linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay, policy information is on en.nia.gov.cn, and paper maps plus Google Translate offline cover a short visit. The official apps earn their install when you value bundling: Nihao China puts three QR networks, 43-city transit and translation in one app; SinoGuide pushes policy updates and stay-expiry reminders to you.
Nihao China or Alipay for a one- or two-week trip?
Nihao China if you want the simplest single install — one app, three QR networks, transit included, no deep setup. Alipay if you want the proven path — higher documented international-card limits, wider online acceptance, and the app every guide and local assumes you have. Many travelers install both: Nihao China for scanning-and-riding, Alipay for anything that goes wrong.
Is SinoGuide worth downloading?
For Android users living in China on a visa or residence permit, it's a reasonable free companion — official policy explanations and stay-expiry reminders in one bilingual app. For iPhone users it doesn't exist yet (verified September 2026 via Apple's public search API), and short-term visitors get little from it. Where does TenPayGo fit in?
TenPayGo is Tencent's counterpart on the WeChat Pay network: email-only signup, seven international card networks, AI translation and Shenzhen-scoped transit and tax refund. Against Nihao China it trades network breadth (one QR ecosystem vs three) for a lighter, email-based identity. The hands-on review is here.
Can any of these apps translate other Chinese apps into English?
No — that's the gap none of them fills. SinoGuide's translation works inside SinoGuide; the payment apps translate their own conversations and screens. Third-party apps like Meituan, Taobao or 12306 change language only in their own settings, if at all — which is why per-app English setup guides exist.
Quick Summary: China’s official-app wave of 2025–2026 gives you two genuinely new tools: SinoGuide, the government’s bilingual information companion (Android-only so far), and Nihao China, UnionPay’s visitor payment app that scans all three QR networks and rides 43-city metro. Neither replaces Alipay or WeChat Pay for a real stay. The short version: Nihao China for the simplest short-trip wallet, Alipay for everything deeper, SinoGuide only if you’re an Android user who wants policy pushed to you.
Between late 2025 and 2026, three visitor-facing apps shipped from China’s establishment: SinoGuide from the Cyberspace Administration and National Immigration Administration, Nihao China from UnionPay, and TenPayGo from the WeChat Pay team. Search results for them are still dominated by press releases and store pages, which is exactly why a plain-language comparison is worth writing.
Here’s the field, what each tool is actually for, and where the classic apps still win.
The 30-Second Answer
- Just paying during a short trip? Nihao China (one install, three QR networks, transit) or a foreign card linked to Alipay — either works; many people do both.
- Staying weeks to years? Alipay + WeChat, set up properly with passport and Chinese phone number. The official visitor apps don’t replace them.
- Want government info in English on your phone? SinoGuide — if you’re on Android. iPhone users: en.nia.gov.cn covers the same ground.

What Each App Actually Is
SinoGuide — the government information companion. Launched November 7, 2025 at the Wuzhen World Internet Conference under CAC + NIA guidance, operated by the NIA’s Immigration Affairs Service Center. Thirty-one bilingual services grouped around policy explanations, online application entries, stay-expiry reminders, daily-life links and language tutoring. The reality check: still version 0.5.57 as of late September 2026, distributed via Tencent’s YingYongBao store, a few hundred downloads there, and no iOS version exists (Apple’s US-store search API returns nothing matching). Nihao China — UnionPay’s visitor wallet. On both stores since late 2025 (iOS records date to October 10, 2025; v1.0.8 shipped September 18, 2026). Scans UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance codes across 1,000+ scenarios, pays on 200+ Chinese online platforms (12306, Meituan, Ele.me, Ctrip, JD), rides metro in 43 major cities and buses in 1,760+ county regions, translates Chinese–English in real time with Japanese/Korean/Arabic/Russian recognition. Alipay and WeChat Pay — the classics. Foreign-card binding has worked smoothly since 2023, Alipay carries the higher documented daily limits of the two, and together they unlock mini-programs, delivery, and everything the visitor apps don’t reach. Full setup: How to Pay in China.

Three practical tiebreakers:
- Limits. Alipay’s documented international-card daily ceiling is far higher than WeChat Pay’s (¥50,000 vs ¥3,000, roughly US$7,000 vs US$420 — details in our payment guide). Nihao China and TenPayGo don’t publish comparable schedules; if you’re making large purchases, the classics’ numbers are the known quantity.
- Cash. UnionPay’s own pages note that foreign-issued cards can withdraw CNY 3,000 (~US$420) per transaction at Chinese ATMs under SAFE rules — relevant if your backup plan is plastic rather than an app.
- Failure modes. Every visitor wallet has declining days. Carrying two independent payment paths (say, Nihao China plus a card-linked Alipay) beats carrying one perfect one.
The Government-Information Decision
SinoGuide’s competition isn’t really an app — it’s the question of whether you need policy information pushed to you:

The same information, source-grade, is always on the NIA’s English site — SinoGuide is packaging, not access. And watch the namesake trap: a travel company sharing the SinoGuide name and an unofficial sinoguide.app site both rank for it; the official app’s operator is the NIA service center (package com.iflytek.ga.yzg).
What None of the Official Apps Do
All three apps translate inside themselves — SinoGuide’s Chinese-page translation, Nihao China’s conversation translator, TenPayGo’s AI tools. None of them changes the interface language of China’s actual daily-life apps. Meituan, Taobao, Dianping, Xiaohongshu and 12306 stay Chinese unless you change each app’s own settings, where the option exists at all.
