What You Need Before Starting

The Taobao app (iOS/Android) — the mobile app is far better supported for foreigners than the website
A phone number that can receive SMS — your overseas number works for registration; you do not need a Chinese number (see Chinese phone numbers for foreigners if you want one anyway)

Step 1: Register

Open the Taobao app → Sign Up / 注册
Enter your phone number with your country code (e.g., +1, +44, +65)
Enter the SMS code you receive
Set a password and nickname — done

If the SMS never arrives: check the country code is correct, wait a minute (Chinese SMS gateways can be slow to international carriers), and retry once. Still nothing? Register through Alipay instead — Alipay accounts can authorize a Taobao login in one tap, and you already have Alipay from the payment setup.

Step 2: Turn On English

Tap Me → Settings (设置) → Language/语言 and switch to English. The app also has a built-in translation toggle (the flag/translate icon in search results and product pages) that machine-translates listings into English — rough but sufficient for shopping. Product reviews translate too, and reading translated reviews is how you avoid the classic Taobao mistakes (sizes run small, “photo vs reality”).

Step 3: Pay

At checkout, choose Alipay → it opens your Alipay app → confirm with your linked international card. No Chinese bank account, no UnionPay, no top-up balance needed. Two notes:

Foreign-card transactions above small amounts may trigger an extra verification in your bank’s app — approve it

Step 4: First Order — the Parts Guides Skip

Search smart. Search in English with the translate toggle on, but the best results come from searching the Chinese brand or item name (paste from a photo using the app’s image search — the camera icon in the search bar). Image search is the single most effective Taobao skill for foreigners.

Read the listing like a local:

Price shown is usually the base variant — tap the SKU selector (color/size) and the real price may change
销量 (sales count) is your trust signal: thousands of sales + 4.8 reviews = safe bet for a first order
Check the 运费 (shipping fee) line — many listings are free-shipping (包邮), some charge ¥5–15

Step 5: The Delivery Address — the Real Bottleneck

Couriers deliver to a Chinese address with a Chinese mobile number for the delivery call. If you are in China:

Hotel: ask the front desk first. Many hotels accept guest packages routinely — get their Chinese address, add your booking name and room number, and use the front desk’s phone number with their consent. Our hotel booking guide covers asking in practice.
Apartment: use your lease address. Copy the Chinese address exactly from your lease or ask your landlord/agent to type it into WeChat for you — do not hand-translate it. See renting in China for context.

Ordering from abroad (shipping internationally): Taobao checkout to overseas addresses exists for some listings but is unreliable for foreigners; the established route is a forwarding warehouse (转运公司) — you deliver to their Chinese warehouse, they ship internationally.
