For a short trip, Nihao China trades some depth for simplicity: one install, three QR networks, transit included, no Chinese phone number gymnastics. Alipay remains the deeper tool — higher documented international-card limits, the full super-app, better for stays beyond a few weeks. Can I use Nihao China if I live in China?

Nihao China is published by China UnionPay Co., Ltd. — the national card network — through its international arm. Apple’s records show the iOS version on the store since October 10, 2025, currently at version 1.0.8 with an update shipped September 18, 2026: an actively maintained product, not a launch-day relic.
The App Store category is simply “Finance,” and the official description promises a one-stop service for international visitors: QR payments with bus and metro access, maps, real-time voice translation, exchange-rate tools, visa appointments, local data plans, tax refunds, and a smart assistant that walks you through steps. Behind the app stands UnionPay’s mainland acceptance network — over 27 million merchants and 1.1 million ATMs for cards, and over 25 million merchants taking UnionPay QR — plus a 24/7 service hotline, 95516.
One App, Three QR Networks
This is the feature to understand, because it’s what no mainstream wallet offers. In China, a QR code at a counter usually belongs to one ecosystem — the merchant displays an Alipay code, a WeChat Pay code, or a UnionPay code. Visitors normally handle this by installing the matching super-app and binding a card to it.
Nihao China collapses that choice. Per the official page, its scanner handles UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance across 1,000+ service scenarios — restaurants, shops, transit, hotels and the rest. You scan whatever code is in front of you; the app routes the payment through its own funding (Tour Balance or your linked card).
Online, the app reaches 200+ Chinese platforms — the official page names 12306 (trains), Meituan and Ele.me (food), Ctrip and JD.com (travel and shopping). That covers the bookings a visitor actually makes, though it’s a subset of what native Alipay/WeChat reach — a gap that matters more the longer you stay.
Transit: 43 Cities of Metro, 1,760+ Regions of Bus
The built-in transit QR covers metro systems in 43 major Chinese cities — for scale, that’s every city a foreign visitor is likely to touch — plus bus networks in over 1,760 county-level regions. No deposit, no physical card, no Chinese phone number dance at a metro service window.
This pairs naturally with the payment side: land, install, top up a Tour Balance, ride. Alipay’s ride code covers much of the same ground for city transit, so the difference is bundling — Nihao China aims to make transit one checkbox inside your visitor wallet rather than another app to configure. Translation and the Traveler Extras
The translator is real-time Chinese–English, with smart recognition for Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Russian — a language list that tells you exactly which visitor flows UnionPay is chasing. The App Store description adds the surrounding toolkit: visa-appointment entries, local data plans, tax-refund access, exchange-rate tools, maps, and a smart assistant that gives “step-by-step instructions throughout the journey.”
If your itinerary is Russian- or Arabic-speaking, this is currently the most localization-forward of the visitor wallets — community reports from Russian travelers describe linking Russian bank cards and paying normally, which matches the app’s language slant.
Funding the App: Tour Balance or Bank Card
The official page documents two modes, and the choice is genuinely a trade-off:
- Tour Balance (prepaid top-up). Spending is capped at what you loaded — clean for short trips and budget control. The leftover-balance problem is the flip side: top up conservatively.
- Bind a bank card. No top-up leftovers, direct charging as you pay. UnionPay cards work across the app’s whole footprint; for international networks, the official web page doesn’t enumerate the list — the Add Card screen in the app is the live truth. Verify your card there before relying on it.

What the records show, plainly:
- Ratings are mixed and small. The US App Store shows 3.35 stars from 23 ratings — a thin base, so read it as “early app, real complaints,” not a verdict. The update cadence (v1.0.8, September 18, 2026) is the healthier signal.
- The fee schedule isn’t published on the web. UnionPay’s pages document scope and promotions, not per-transaction costs. The confirmation screen before each payment is where any fee line appears — check your first one.
- It’s a visitor app. No local bank account, no person-to-person transfers, no mini-programs. Fine for two weeks; wrong for two years.
Set against that, the scope is genuinely wide for a single install — three QR networks, 43-city transit, 200+ platforms — and unlike a super-app, nothing here requires a Chinese phone number to get started.

Worth installing if: you’re visiting for days to a few weeks; you want one app for payments + transit + translation instead of configuring Alipay and WeChat both; your home wallet isn’t one of the foreign wallets that already work in China; or you want a Russian/Arabic-friendly payment tool.
